NEW!!! Creative Hearts Event

So we're trying something NEW!!!
I've had this concept for many years actually... I recognize that not all creative people are "crafters" (ie. think paper crafters, scrapbookers, carmakers, etc.),
but I do believe all people are creative.

I believe that God created us in His image and because He is THE CREATOR,
it makes sense that we are also Creators then as well. I believe when we create, we are reflecting God's very nature...

Some do it through gardening or woodworking while others create music or knit or crochet and sew. I do photography, home decor and paper crafting and am dabbling in makeup and fashion as well and recently became aware of Bible Art Journaling... creatively portraying lessons from the Bible right inside my Bible (recognize the logo now?).

And I'm still passionate about Haiti and helping others so we are presenting an event that celebrates all things CREATIVE and supports some great causes (Haiti, Christy Riopel ART scholarship and Grace Youth summer Missions Trip)!! We have partnered with Grace Baptist Women's Ministry and the Grace Youth for a full day of opportunity for you to exercise your creative side... and classes to teach and guide you along in a variety of creative outlets!!

At our Creative Hearts event on Sat. Feb. 11, we have:
Paper Crafting
Jewelry Making
Bible Art Journaling
Photography
Card Making
and more!!

DROP-IN throughout the day to CREATE!!
or STAY and CREATE all day!!

NEW Photography Class!! Join me this Saturday!!

So if you've ever been intimidated by your camera, THIS is the class for you!!!

It is a new class that is based on the concept that we learn BEST through PLAY!!  And so I have a bag of "tricks and toys" that we will use to learn how to move off auto mode and into a little bit of creative play with our photos!!

Meanwhile, click HERE to register for Saturday!!!  I would  LOVE to play with you!!

Photo Friday (Calgary Portrait Photographer)

Today's Photo Friday picture is personal again...
my very own "Butterfly Girl"...
may she truly know how beautiful she is simply for being her...
beautiful inside and out... exactly as she is.

I recently had a mom confide that her teen daughter suffers from poor self-esteem at times (sadly whose teen daughter doesn't?!?!?) and she was wondering if doing a photo shoot with me might help?

My response?
That is EXACTLY who I want to photograph!!!!  Anyone who has ever looked in the mirror and not felt good enough... I want to provide a very unique experience
where they get pampered,
are the sole focus of attention,
get to play dress-up and
experience a "beauty" shoot
with the added bonus of beautiful photos of themselves
that they actually love!
And I know it sounds like it's all about the outer beauty, but there is truly something special that seems to also happen inside... a little boost of confidence that comes each time they see the photos :)

So... do you know a teen girl that could use a boost?
I'd love to help :)

HELP me HELP them! Calgary Flood 2013

Please comment below or on my Facebook Page if you know a Deserving Woman/Family I can help in this way.

As most of you probably already know, southern Alberta, including Calgary, recently suffered a horrific flood that has devastated so very many families... thankfully, although we were in the flood zone, our home was spared.

It was late Thursday night on June 20 when a friend messaged me that our area was being evacuated.  I had seen news footage of the absolute destruction in High River and Canmore and could hardly believe it... and knowing the swell was now heading to Calgary, I was still certain our home would not be affected (even though I live just up from the river).  I had even invited friends to come stay with us when they were evacuated earlier that evening!!!

But within the hour, the police were at our door telling us we needed to leave so we quickly cleared our basement best we could, moved the scrapbooks up to the top floor, packed our bags and left to go stay at my mom's home.  It would be a few days before we could move back in, but I am so grateful to God that he spared our home... but am oh so sad for others who lost everything :(

So today we gathered some of the youth from our church to head out to help one of our members whose home was flooded while she was out of town... talk about mixed emotions today!!!  Happy to be able to help, proud of our kids (who are too young to officially volunteer... need to be 18) and yet so sad to see how much she lost (cried along with her), but then inspired by her heart to stay positive and focus on the blessings she DOES still have in her life :)

So all this time, I have been thinking and wondering what else I can do to help... and today when I saw my friend's photos all in ruin (although I am a "super scrapper" and know how to salvage pretty much any photo!!), I have decided that I can also maybe help out someone who has lost everything by giving the gift of some new beautiful photos... of themselves, of their kids, of their family.

In my new business, I already have established my "Deserving Women" program and I think it is definitely time to offer another deserving women/family a special photo shoot to help them have hope for the future...

BUT I NEED YOUR HELP TO FIND THEM!!!!

So if you know someone who has lost everything in the flood who you would like to nominate, please leave a comment below or on my Facebook page along with a brief story of why you think they are deserving of this gift... it will be sheer pleasure to do this for someone!!!  For more information, be sure to check out my website at www.AllisonOrthner.com.

My Most Dangerous Mission Yet...

Since moving almost 3 years ago, I have been basically taking a hiatus from my studio photography business.  In case you didn't know, about 17 years ago I started a portrait business out of my home shooting black and white... mostly babies and children... especially my own...

And I specialized in hand-painting colour onto my images... a true combo of photography and art!!!

Babies and children are so EASY to shoot as it seems like all moms LOVE any and ALL images of their precious children!!!  But if/when I would suggest that Mom get in on the pictures, there was usually a swift and definitive decline of the offer!!!  And I didn't really push because I had learned long ago, most women do NOT like themselves in photographs and complain bitterly about how they look (which REALLY hurls a photographer's ego down the drain as our pictures are our "art"!)

But as a scrapbooker and photographer, I have spent years trying to tell women to get OUT from behind the camera and get IN to some photos... if for no other reason than to document that you in fact DID exist on this earth!!!  And some did listen, but they would still complain about the photos :(

And so I had pretty much decided that I was NOT going to pursue taking photos of women and stick to babies and children (which I do still LOVE to do!!!).  But I was NOT going to "sign up" for getting "kicked down" when women didn't like their photos!!

But then it happened....

During my hiatus, I was taking a TON of photography courses and came across a style of photography that is a contemporary modern version of the "glamour" photography of the 80s!!

And my heart lept inside of me
as I realized that my passion
for helping women truly value themselves...
all the messages I have presented for years
at our Scrapbook Your Heart retreats...
could be partnered with my photography...
if done right!!!!

And there definitely is a RIGHT way of doing it and I have been studying it and practicing it ever since!!

And it just makes so much sense to me now... every woman wants to be loved and feel valued and feel beautiful!!  As young girls, we pretend we are princesses and dream of finding true love...

And although we grow up and put aside our fairy tale dreams, we are still captivated with stories of princesses (look at how we still gravitate to everything and anything about the Royal Family) and dream of true love (hundreds of classic romantic movies)... and yearn to feel young and beautiful (just look at the billions of dollars spent on beauty aids).

And the more I learned and studied, the more excited I became that I could quite possibly take beautiful photos of women that they actually like themselves in!!!!!!!

But I tell you...
it is my most DANGEROUS mission yet!!!!

Why?

Because I am battling society's messages that you need to look a certain way, be a certain weight, be a certain height, have a certain body type, dress a certain way and be a certain age,
...in order to be beautiful.

And I'm battling...

...generations of women, unbeknownst to themselves, complaining out loud about themselves and by doing so, are teaching their daughters to also worry about their hair, their weight, their age, and perpetuating the belief that our worth is tied to our exterior traits...

Why can't we simply see ourselves for who we are...
the woman that God created us to be... exactly as we are...

...a beautiful 82 year old mother, grandmother, wife, sister, friend, woman of faith, musician.

And I'm definitely battling those inner voices...
women who feel guilty spending time and money on themselves... who don't feel worthy enough especially for something as "frivolous" as a photo (that they probably won't like anyways) and who don't think it's important to document themselves in pictures much past their wedding day!!!

And most of all, I'm battling my own fears...
I'm scared to death of putting my heart and soul
into photos of women that I think are beautiful
spending hours planning the shoot
employing every little tip and trick I've learned
then enhancing and adjusting in post
all to make them look beautiful in a photo
...only to have them hate it.

Told you this whole idea was DANGEROUS!!!!!

But I'm not going to quit.
I've already experienced so many wonderful reactions even from women who say they have never liked a picture of themselves... EVER!!!
Watch as I share their images and stories here and/or join my new Facebook Page

And because the happy reactions far outweigh the negative, I will continue to make it my  dangerous mission...

To take beautiful photos of every day women.

Sneak Peek!!!

Guess what one of my next BIG REVEALS is going to be????!!!!!

My NEW STUDIO!!!!!!!

This is just a "sneak peek" of what I've been working VERY hard to get ready!!  I did a "test run" this past week with this cutie patootie and absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE this new look!!!!

Since moving over a year ago, I haven't really been doing any "official" studio shoots because I have been planning, dreaming, creating and collecting "FUN STUFF" for my NEW studio and working on my NEW website!!!  And it's oh so close to all coming together!!!

So this little "test run" has done two things... first, it has just reaffirmed how much I miss doing creative and unique portraits in a studio and second, it's inspired me to get'r done!!!!   Not sure if it will be in time for Christmas, but at the very least, I'll have gift certificates available!!

So what do you think????  I know I'm excited :)

It's Time to Book Your GRAD photos!!!

One of my all-time favourite photos to do are GRAD photos!!!!

Whether it is for Grade 9 or Grade 12, I just love working with this age as they are game for having some fun!!!

When doing INDIVIDUAL photo shoots, we get to focus ALL the attention on YOU... different outfits, different poses, locations and looks...

But just imagine how much fun you can have with your friends during a GROUP photo shoot...

And we must not forget the classic look of some dramatic BLACK & WHITE images...
